In this department we use molecular, morphological, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches to study various aspects of the development, function, and structure of the nervous system.
We investigate signal transduction mechanisms during the development of the fruit fly, the gene control of vertebrate brain development and its structure in the adult. We study the functional integration of neural circuits involved in brain rythms, the neurophysiological mechanisms of pain and the endogenous mechanisms of analgesia, the neural mechanisms of tactile object recognition and the motor integration of responses to sensory sitmuli. We also analyze the effect on the nervous system of neurodegenerative diseases and the use of inhalants.
The effects of perinatal malnutrition are used as a model to study brain function during ontogeny and in the adult state.
